Zakaj je pomembno poznati indeks telesne mase?

Indeks telesne mase je dober način za preverjanje tveganja za bolezni, povezane s telesno maščobo. Življenje s prekomerno telesno težo ali debelostjo je povezano s povečanim tveganjem za smrtnost in druge bolezni ali stanja. Na splošno velja, da višji kot je indeks telesne mase, večje je tveganje za razvoj drugih kroničnih bolezni, povezanih z debelostjo, kot so:

  • Sladkorna bolezen tipa 2
  • Visoka raven sladkorja v krvi
  • Visoka raven holesterola
  • Visok krvni tlak
  • Neplodnost
  • Depresija in tesnoba
  • Koronarna bolezen srca (npr. srčni infarkt)
  • Dislipidemija
  • Steatohepatitis, povezan z metabolno disfunkcijo (MASH)

Kakšne so omejitve indeksa telesne mase?

Indeks telesne mase je preprosta in objektivna meritev, vendar je lahko v nekaterih primerih in pri nekaterih skupinah ljudi zavajajoča. Raziskave so pokazale, da je indeks telesne mase manj natančen pri napovedovanju tveganja za nastanek bolezni pri starejših, športnikih, visokih in nizkih osebah ter osebah z bolj mišičastim telesom. Elitni športniki ali bodybuilderji imajo na primer več mišic in tehtajo več, zato je njihov indeks telesne mase višji.

Indeks telesne mase tudi ne upošteva naslednjega:

  • Dednih dejavnikov tveganja, ki spremljajo bolezni, povezane z debelostjo, kot je presnovni sindrom
  • Okoljskih dejavnikov in dejavnikov življenjskega sloga, ki niso povezani z debelostjo in lahko prispevajo k tveganju za razvoj kroničnih bolezni
  • Kakšna je razporeditev maščobe pri posameznikih

Pomembno si je zapomniti, da življenje z debelostjo ne pomeni nujno, da ste nezdravi, tako kot normalna telesna teža ne pomeni, da ste zdravi. Vaš indeks telesne mase vas ne določa, vendar je poznavanje in razumevanje vašega indeksa telesne mase lahko močno orodje, s katerim lahko prevzamete odgovornost za svoje zdravje.

Ne glede na indeks telesne mase zdravstveni delavci priporočajo zdravo prehrano in življenjski slog. Z zdravnikom se pogovorite o svoji telesni teži in zdravju ter ocenite, kakšni ukrepi so morda potrebni.

Kako lahko indeks telesne mase in razmerje med pasom in višino pomagata pri upravljanju zdravja srca


Pri ljudeh s prekomerno telesno težo ali debelostjo obstaja večje tveganje za nastanek bolezni srca in ožilja, znanih tudi kot bolezni srca.

Čeprav se za oceno tveganja za nastanek srčno-žilnih bolezni lahko uporabljata tako indeks telesne mase kot razmerje med pasom in višino (WHtR), velja, da je razmerje med pasom in višino močnejši napovedovalec dejavnikov tveganja za srčno-žilne bolezni, kot sta visok krvni tlak in visok holesterol.

Indeks telesne mase se uporablja za opredelitev kategorije telesne teže osebe na podlagi njene višine in teže. Razmerje med pasom in višino pa se uporablja za merjenje porazdelitve telesne maščobe na podlagi telesne višine in obsega pasu. Merjenje razmerja med pasom in višino je pomembno, saj je prekomerna količina maščobe, zlasti okoli trebuha, povezana s povečanim tveganjem za nastanek bolezni srca.
